Senior Moments | July 5, 2023

It’s not only academic competence we need to have but also lifelong learning skills to have a successful career path in the field of communication. One essential and crucial part of a comm student’s journey is their radio and broadcast internship. Wherein they put their knowledge and skills into practice and have valuable work experience.

Our seniors shared their experiences and learnings from their internships during the 1st and 2nd semesters. They had the opportunity to explore their career and have development. One most important thing is they learned a lot more about the career they’re trying to pursue. They also mentioned the importance of having or developing the skills needed to have a successful internship which are good communication skills, good writing skills, active listening, problem-solving, research, creativity, and more.

Why are skills important? Interns who have or started to develop skills are more likely to have a good working experience because they are prepared to adjust to their future potential nature of work. The seniors also stressed that during the internship, we’d work in different working environments, so we’ll learn to adjust and adapt to changes in our surroundings, especially when handling work pressure.

Also, maintaining a good relationship with your current employer may result in future employment. What can be the reason?

  • Communication — it is crucial to demonstrate your expertise in the field of communication through written, verbal, and physical communication. For example, when communicating via email, ensure your message is clear and concise by rereading it before sending it.
  • Ambition — indicates that you have a goal in mind and are moving toward a better future. It assists you in maintaining your drive and commitment to your goals.
  • Confidence — helps us feel ready for life’s experiences. We are more likely to pursue opportunities when we are confident.
  • Critical thinking — having the capability to the mental process of fact-checking to comprehend a situation or subject fully. Having this skill means you can quickly process information and efficiently gather knowledge.
  • Eagerness to learn — You can develop your skills, respond to situations, and become a better version of yourself by being open to learning. You highlight your dedication to growth.
  • Flexibility — Employers like employees with a strong capacity for adaptation. Any workplace will experience constructive criticism, unforeseen adjustments, and worst-case scenarios. You maintain an open mind when faced with challenges.
  • Teamwork — Though not every job requires collaboration, teamwork allows you to collaborate effectively during conversations, projects, meetings, or other activities.
  • Work ethic — is the top quality employers look for in an employee. Your work ethic skills demonstrate dedication to one’s position within an organization.

These are my learnings from our dear seniors during the Senior Moments last July 5, 2023. All the best, BA COM Batch 2023!
